Hello from Western United States.
« Antwort #1 am: 04.02.2012 um 14:27 »
Hello all, Thanks for letting me join the forum. I'm not fluent in German so i will be writing in English. I fight in a full contact game called  Dagorhir. I currently live in the western U.S.A, and I am incredibly impressed by the caliber of your kits. I hope to one day make in to Drachenfest but the travel cost is a bit daunting.  I have been running with a Orc unit for the last five years but our garb standards are deplorable. Me and the other unit leaders want to improve the look of our group. Any suggestions? The picture is of about half our unit, I am not in it.

I hope to open some lines of communication between us, we would love to learn what you do. Any tips or tricks would really help. I really want to make a knife like I've seen on your boards. (They are to small to pass as legal weapons in my game but i want it for appearance more than anything.) Anything you guys can do to help would be very appreciated.

Thanks again,

Since somehow related to Drachenfest i moved this post to here.
Check back 2 www.orklager.org sometimes - relaunch is in progress an new site is supposed to host a tutorial section. Since the german orc-community seems to drag some "cross-boarder-attention" it might
be an option to translate some "basic" tutorials.

And your pic is awesome ^^...like travellin´ back to ´98 ;D.

Yep, nice pic. Most of the people here (including myself, of course) looked exactly like that the time they began their larp career as orcs, so never mind.
Take some time to figure out what u want ur charakter to look like and then start with a concept. Think about the background of your tribe/warband/whatever, where they live, what they do and what gear people like that would use.
A nomadic tribe from the desert has a different look compared to heavy troopers from Mordor for example.
Make sure u have an exact picture in your mind of what u want to represent and build your clothes/armour/weapons/ambient stuff around that concept. The people should know what u are from a single look. Larp is about how u are perceived by the people around u by the first look and the clichè you fit in.
Use materials fitting best to the lifestyle your char is used to. Fur is important for hunters from northern lands, linen for the desert-dwellers mentioned above, iron mail or plate for soldiers and so on. Use dark natural colours, brown, green, grey, dont overuse black. Make sure all your eqip has a decent "used look". Take inspiration in the pictures you find in the "werkstatt" - section of the forum.
Most important, have fun and dont give up if the first results dont look like you imagined them.

Gor Lon speaks some true words, use leather, linen, wool and start with some parts of leather, wool and linen are MUCH easier to handle than steel and ironworks and therefore much easier to start with

make sure you use natural fibres, there is no such thing as orcish plastic

hand work is the key to a rugged individual look

start sewing some trousers, a vest or a skirt from rough linen or wool, use your imagination to destroy it, pretty much everything is allowed, use hammers, files and  wire brushes, everything you can imagine, drag it with your car on a farm lane, blow it up with fireworks, burn it, use a sandblaster if you can ...

then fix it with different materials, use rugged stitches and different patches, then destroy it again

make some litres strong coffee or tea and let the fabric "marinate" for some days

use shoe polish, dye, wax or plain dirt to "improve" the look furthermore

red beetroot juice cooked with starch gives you a great artifical blood for some spots

if you want to use leather parts, just use a hammer and a hard surface, thats gonna destroy the inner structure of the leather and gives you an awesome look in return, dont use rivets, sew it even if its a LOT of work, the returns are well worth it

the biggest key in an orcish look are many different layers, different colours, materials and states of destruction

if you dont know where to buy the materials you might want to search for some reenactment groups and traders and ask them if they can help you

you might be able to order from lederkram.de which is where we get a lot of our stuff, but shipment to the US is gonna be expensive

that should give your group a great push in appearance, the next big step would be armor, weapons and masks, three things were i cant help you, but maybe someone else can ;)

Thanks for the advice everyone, it was very helpful. I just finished a pair of loose baggy wrap pants that will be worn under my deer hide and war skirt. My gut belt is in the mail and I'm trying to decide on what kind of mask to get. My biggest problem right now is what kind of top to wear. Any suggestions?

Hi Garret,

yes, the ungebil.de-masks are still available. Best way for you to get one is to contact Ellen, who runs the ungebil.de-shop and give her an idea of what you want and how it should be modified.
I’m not sure though, if the website is available in English or if Ellen speaks it well enough to get an idea of what you want but I guess it is still worth a try.
Ungebil.de generally offers plenty of options to customise and pimp you mask to fit your needs. If the shape of your head ain’t too special, you should be able to wear the masks without much complication.
Good luck putting the orc together

Thanks so much for your feedback. I will reach out to Ellen.

I am lucky to have been in the SCA for years as well, so the armor is not too hard to get.

We are trying very hard to upgrade the costumes at Knight Realms and my Orc is going to drive the other greenskins in the game to improve.

Thanks again for all your help. This is a great resource!
